PIRA – Macro Trends in Global Oil and Energy Markets

  • Global oil demand growth is strong and will remain healthy over the medium term.
  • Oil prices will recover in 2017 as surplus stocks are drawn. Ultimately, prices will reflect the cost of non-OPEC supplies (e.g., shale oil) which will be needed to meet demand growth.
  • Large amounts of Australian and U.S. LNG will be surging into the market over the next 24 months. Price will need to drop in order for demand to clear to levels competitive with coal plus carbon.

Managing Director, Global Oil Group, PIRA Energy Group

‘Make in India’: A New Window of Opportunity for Commodities – A Special Report by S&P Global Platts

  • As India pushes to raise manufacturing sector’s share in GDP, it has brightened up the demand outlook for oil, steel, coal and LNG.
  • There are many reasons to be optimistic about the Indian manufacturing growth story, as well as good grounds for caution.
  • India can nurture growth in its manufacturing sector only if it strikes a balance between export and domestic demand-led growth. This will require relentless efforts to improve the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.

PIRA – Changing Global Bunker Specifications and Implications for the Rest of the Barrel

  • Global bunker fuel sulfur specifications will drastically tighten in 2020 forcing major changes in shipping, refining, and fuel oil trade.
  • Higher cost refining steps will be needed to produce on-spec fuel while “destroying” large volumes of unwanted high sulfur fuel oil.
  • Gasoil – fuel oil price spreads will widen sharply in 2020 then gradually narrow as capital investments rebalance supply over the following few years.

PIRA – Global Generating Fuels Analytics

  • Coal prices are searching for a new short-term equilibrium after a surge in late 2016 but coal demand growth faces a myriad of challenges over the long-term, limiting the upside for pricing.
  • LNG developers are attacking the cost curve in order to lower delivered prices to compete in power generation.
  • Oil use in generation is small relative to gas and coal, but locally important. It is still an important factor in heavy oil price formation as other uses for fuel oil are becoming more limited.
