Dave Ernsberger

Dave Ernsberger

Global Head of Energy Pricing & Co-Head of Content, S&P Global Platts

Dave Ernsberger is Platts' Global Head of Energy Pricing. Based in London since 2010, he is responsible for managing Platts' worldwide markets coverage for oil, generating fuels, shipping and petrochemicals. Dave has served in a variety of roles at Platts, including Head of Oil Content, where he managed Platts’ global coverage of oil markets, news and analytics between 2010 and 2016. Before that, Dave was Senior Editorial Director for Asia, managing Platts' editorial and analytical groups in Singapore, Japan, Australia, the Philippines, and China from 2004 until 2009. Dave joined Platts in 1996 as a metals reporter, and, in 1999, Dave took on responsibility for Platts' new European power start-up ventures as editor-in-chief, launching coverage of the deregulating electricity and natural gas markets in the European Union. He relocated to Houston in 2001 as bureau chief, before moving to Singapore in November 2003. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., Dave has a bachelor's degree in philosophy and politics from Warwick University, England, and a master's degree in international relations from Southampton University, England.


Chris Midgley

Head of Global Analytics, S&P Global Platts

Chris recently joined S&P Global Platts as the Head of Global Analytics and member of the Executive Committee. He has over 25 years’ experience in the oil industry starting his career engineering design and manufacturing with Exxon having gained degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1997 he joined Shell where he held a number of roles in Supply & Trading based both in Europe and Australia including heading up their Fuel Oil Trading Team. He spent five years in Strategy running Shell’s Downstream Management Consultancy and as Senior Strategy Adviser for Cost Reduction and Joint Venture Excellence.

In his most recent role before joining S&P Global Platts, he was Chief Economist to Shell Trading and Head of Oil Markets Analysis, where he advised business on short-term dynamics effecting Global Oil Markets in order to develop Trading Strategies. He led a team which model the future crude, oil products and chemicals trends in order to provide fundamentals and pricing to support strategic planning, and capital investment decisions across the Group. His most recent work included developing a Future Mobility Strategy for the Group and articulating the fundamental which will influence the Energy Transition.


Jonty Rushforth

Senior Director, Energy Price Group, S&P Global Platts

Jonty works at Platts as the Senior Director, Energy Price Group and is based in the London office. He was previously the Editorial Director for Asia and Middle East Oil Markets, and was based in Singapore for seven years where he managed the market reporting team that assesses crude and products prices across the region.

Prior to this he covered commodities markets in Europe. He has a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University and an MA from Cardiff University in International Journalism.

Joel Hanley is Senior Director, European and African Oil, responsible for Platts’ oil price assessments and market reporting in the region, including several benchmarks such as Dated Brent. Joel joined Platts in 2002, reporting on the crude oil markets of the North Sea, West Africa, Russia and the Middle East. Prior to his work at Platts, Joel wrote for Energy Risk magazine where he covered risk management and energy market deregulation. He also launched Oil & Gas Technology magazine for the Chinese market. Joel holds a degree in Russian and Information Technology from The University of Exeter.


Paula VanLaningham

Managing Editor, European & African Crude Oil, S&P Global Platts

Paula VanLaningham is the Managing Editor of the European, Middle East and African crude oil team at Platts in London. Her primary focus has been on the Russian, Mediterranean and Middle East crude markets, but she has also been responsible for Platts’ coverage in the North Sea and West Africa, among the most widely used price assessments globally. She began her career at Platts looking at both the European jet fuel and light ends markets. Paula graduated from the London School of Economics with a Master’s of Science degree in International Political Economy and with Latin Honors from the George Washington University in Washington DC with a degree in International Politics and European affairs.


John Morley

Editor, European & African Crude Oil, S&P Global Platts

John Morley is an editor in the European and African crude oil team. He has covered the Atlantic Basin crude market for Platts since October 2016, with his primary focus on the North Sea crude market. He has also covered the West African and Mediterranean crude sectors. Prior to this John spent three years covering the West of Suez dirty and clean freight markets at Platts. He previously worked as a bond analyst with Informa Global Markets. John holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an MSc in Financial Economics from University College Cork.


Herman Wang

Senior Writer, Oil News, S&P Global Platts

Herman Wang is a London-based senior writer, oil news, for S&P Global Platts, reporting on OPEC. He covers OPEC’s semi-annual ministerial meetings in Vienna, and is the principal editor for Platts’ closely followed monthly OPEC production survey. Prior to this, he was a senior editor for Platts based on Washington, D.C., covering US oil policy. He was a co-creator and co-host of Platts Capitol Crude, The US Oil Policy Podcast, which won the 2015 Jesse H. Neal Award for best webcast. Herman is a Northwestern University alum and worked for daily newspapers in Tennessee, North Carolina and Pennsylvania before joining Platts in 2009.

Managing Editor, Americas Crude, S&P Global Platts

John-Laurent leads the Americas bunker fuel and residual fuel oil team for Platts. He covers the dynamic US Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast fuel oil markets, which have seen major changes in recent years and are poised for more shifts. John-Laurent has been with Platts for more than four years, covering electric power, gasoline and middle distillates in addition to dirty products. Prior to joining Platts, John-Laurent covered shale gas exploration and production for three years in the Barnett Shale gas field of North Texas as a business reporter at the Fort Worth Business Press.

Andrew Bonnington is Editorial Director, European and African Oil. Andrew joined Platts in 1999 in a commercial role before joining the oil editorial team in 2004. Andrew has reported on all the major refined products including diesel, gasoline and fuel oil. Andrew started in his current role in March 2013, having previously been responsible for managing Platts European and African coverage of refined products markets. Andrew has also managed the European electricity and shipping reporting teams during his career at Platts. Andrew has a BA honours degree in Political Studies from the University of Leicester.

Managing Editor, European and African Middle Distillates, S&P Global Platts

Francesco Di Salvo is Managing Editor, Europe and African Middle Distillates. At Platts, he has been covering the refined product markets since 2013, focusing on gasoline and distillates in Europe and Africa.

Prior to joining Platts, Francesco analysed the upstream oil and gas markets, with field postings in Nigeria, UAE, Turkey and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where he followed the nascence and consolidation of the hydrocarbons industry.

Francesco holds a BA from the University of Bologna and an MSc from the London School of Economics (LSE).

Ahila Karan is Associate Editor, European and African Oil. She joined Platts in 2016 and reports on Northwest European, Mediterranean and West African oil products and benchmarks. Ahila has previously covered broader physical and paper distillate markets, prior to which, she followed European and CIS ferrous and non-ferrous metal markets. Prior to joining Platts, she worked in the asset management industry. Ahila has a BSc in Economics from the University of Bath and an MSc in Economics from the University College London.


George Shaw

Editor, European & African Middle Distillates, S&P Global Platts

George Shaw is a Middle Distillates editor in Platts oil team. He has been covering distillate markets since June 2014, focusing on gasoil and diesel. Prior to joining Platts, George worked for two years at Total Gas & Power as a pricing analyst.

George holds an MA in Hispanic Studies from the University of Glasgow and an MSc in European Governance from the University of Bristol.


Caroline Knight

Editor, European & African Middle Distillates, S&P Global Platts

Caroline Knight is an Editor in European and African Oil at S&P Global Platts with a special focus on the Northwest European and Mediterranean jet fuel and kerosene markets along with associated middle distillate physical and paper markets. Caroline has been with Platts since 2014, previously covering the pricing of European agriculture products and biofuels, focusing mostly on the ethanol benchmark.


Frank Konertz

Head of LNG Analytics, S&P Global Platts

Frank is S&P Global Platts Head of LNG Analytics, leading a global team of LNG analysts in the US, Europe and Asia focusing on fundamental analysis and forecasting. In a previous role Frank was responsible for the prompt and long term gas analysis service in Europe.

Prior to joining Platts in 2015, Frank held various analyst positions in the gas industry and as a management consultant in the energy industry.

He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Cologne, Germany and an MBA from Eastern Illinois University/USA. Frank is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM).
